Junior Agronomist - Vegetables – East Gippsland, VIC
This is an opportunity for a young farming professional to work with a flourishing farming business based two hours east of Melbourne. A system that provides large scale leafy vegetable production, innovative farming practices and high quality produce to local and international markets.
Who will you work for?
An established farming business with farms spread across the east coast of Australia and a correspondingly broad production window. They produce a range of high quality leafy vegetables and pride themselves on innovation, collaboration and community engagement. Due to the expansion and growth they have achieved, they are looking for an agronomist/production specialist to join the team and assist in continuing to improve the farming system.
The role itself?
This is an opportunity to join a fantastic farm services team. Your day to day activities in this role will include:
Managing all stages of irrigation
Infield checking of crops
Aligning watering to spray programs, planting programs and forecasted weather
Managing water orders, checking and logging water meters and understanding MID allocation
Applying fertigation’s and refilling fertigation tanks as required
Managing ordering and stocktake of fertilisers used for irrigation
General farm tidiness: General Slashing, Control of headland weeds and perimeters, Centre Line Spraying, General farm tidiness spraying
Understanding scheduling & coordination of in crop spraying tasks including Megafol, Cropsure, weekly spray matrix sprays and adhoc sprays
Coordinating spray timing with Projections Manager and Irrigation Manager
Inspecting crops for disease, pest and growth stage
Creating & managing spray roster
Ordering and stocktake of spray chemicals
Monitoring weather and changing spraying events accordingly
What kind of person will fit the role?
The perfect person for this role will have tertiary qualifications in agronomy or agricultural science, an open mind, passion for learning and previous experience in Australian horticultural cropping. As you will be working as part of an established farm team, it is extremely important that you have an ability to communicate, collaborate and lead.
